Volunteer at Your Local Animal Shelter
Give them treats, give them love, give them your time.
At the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA, our volunteers go the extra mile to ensure the health and happiness of each pet in our care. They contribute directly to the lifesaving work that we do for the animals in our community. Volunteers can find themselves walking dogs, cuddling cats, assisting with medical care, sanitizing pet areas, handling animals at events, and so much more! We have volunteers involved in almost every aspect of the shelter and we are always looking for passionate people to join our volunteer team.
PLEASE NOTE: We are pausing the volunteer application and onboarding process as we work through an influx of applications. Please feel free to fill out this FORM to get on our waitlist, or check back in January 2024. We so appreciate the support of our community and can’t wait to meet you in the new year!
How do I join the volunteer team?

Our virtual orientation covers the basics and will help you decide if volunteering with RHSPCA is the right fit for you.

We’re Thankful For Student Volunteers
If you’re a JMU student and you’re interested in volunteering with the RHSPCA, there’s a club on campus called Dukes4Dogs. By joining this club, you would have the opportunity to socialize our pets, take them off-site for adoption events, walk them around JMU, and participate in on-campus initiatives to help improve the lives of our pets.
If you’re interested in joining Dukes for Dogs to help our animal shelter, please fill out an application, or email Dukes4Dogs with any questions you have.
What kind of time commitment do you require?
We ask all volunteers to commit to 8 hours per month (or 2 hours per week) in the shelter for your first 6 months of service. We understand that life happens, so exceptions can be made if necessary!
Is there an age requirement for volunteers?
You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer on your own. For the safety of our volunteers and animals, volunteers age 12-18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Both the parent/guardian and child should complete a volunteer application and complete orientation and trainings.
Do you offer placement for court-ordered community service?
At this time, we cannot accept individuals with court-ordered community service.
