Lost & Found Pets
Found a pet?
The RHSPCA is your source for lost and found pets. Local citizens have reported these animals as found and are safely residing with them temporarily. They are not currently at our animal shelter. If you see a potential match to your missing pet, please contact the RHSPCA so we can get you in touch with the finder.
Please note: This list is not updated in real-time. We ask that you allow our staff 24-48 hours to enter your found report into our lost and found pets system. Breed and age of pets are best guesses.

Can I hold onto the pet while I look for an owner?
Be sure to bring the pet to a vet or animal shelter to have them scanned for a microchip. If you’d like to care for the pet while we try to find its owner, please file a found report with the pet’s information. This way, we know where the animal is and can contact you if the owner reaches out. Please note that we will not share your private information without your permission.
If you can’t find the owner, can I keep the pet?
After 14 days have passed, and you have made an effort to find the lost pet’s owner (like filling out a Found Report, posting on social media, or putting up fliers), you may legally add the pet to your family (no paperwork needed as long as the pet doesn’t enter the shelter).
What do I do if I can’t house the pet I found?
If you cannot keep the animal, and you found them in Rockingham County or Harrisonburg City, you can bring them to the RHSPCA and we’ll take good care of the pet while we wait for its owner. Please call us ahead of time and let us know when you’re coming so we can set up a cozy kennel and be ready when you arrive. You’re welcome to call and check on the animal while it’s at the RHSPCA.
Where do I bring a stray pet when the shelter is closed?
If you find a stray pet outside of our business hours, please call your local police department and ask for Animal Control. They will likely send an officer out to retrieve the animal and bring it to the RHSPCA so it’s safe and warm.
Can I adopt the pet I found and brought to the shelter?
Please note: These pets are not available for adoption. If no owner comes forward at the end of their 7-12 day stray hold, they will need to be medically vetted and assessed behaviorally before being made available for adoption at our animal shelter. Once available, you can fill out an application to adopt the pet if you’d like!
